A quiet 4th of July is in the works at our house. One of the blessings from this Pandemic season has been the time my husband and I get to spend together. Given the choice of heading out for a cook-out elsewhere, we opted to stay home at La Casita – our own little oasis – away from all the crazy stuff going on in the world.
Tomorrow we celebrate the birth of American Independence – our freedom. In 1776 a new identity was established for our people. We took ownership of our lives and said this is who we are and how we choose to live. The founding fathers overcame differences and came to an agreement that birthed our nation. They had a clear purpose – freedom – and committed to make it happen. It was more important to them that they find collective agreement than to be “right” as individuals.
I stop to allow these thoughts to simmer in my spirit. I’m reminded of the Zig Ziglar quote that inspired me to recommit to my writing, “It was character that got us out of bed, commitment that moved us into action, and discipline that enabled us to follow through.”
Our founding fathers had all of that: character, commitment, action, discipline and follow through. How are we as individuals being challenged to do the same? Let’s pray for answers.
“When you call on me, when you come and pray to me, I’ll listen.” –Jer 29:12 [MSG]
