High Five or Not?

Oh look, a bird!  These are the only words I remember from my college professor’s description of my personality traits. It fits me perfectly.  Distractions often rob me of the value of the present.  According to my assessment results, I’m described as enthusiastic, imaginative, energetic, creative, warm, future-oriented, caring, optimistic, possibility focused, open, spontaneous and playful.

Some of you relate. In fact, I imagine us sharing some high fives as we celebrate what we have in common. We are in good company. I confess that I googled personalities with my characteristics and discovered names like: Charles Dickens,Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss), Ellen Degeneres, Jennifer Anniston, Walt Disney, and James Dobson.

Fictional characters were my favorite find:

  • Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,
  • Eliza Doolittle from My Fair Lady, and
  • Ariel from The Little Mermaid.

If it’s on the internet, it must be true,” or so I’ve heard. Well, you will have to discover that for yourselves. For now, in keeping with my playful frame of mind, I choose to take this information at face value.

Do you get me? As humans, we long for acceptance. We are affirmed and encouraged when in the company of those that not only relate to us, but take the time to high five – to celebrate who we are. Important to note however, that those who share our strengths, also share our challenges. To accomplish greatness, to fulfill our God-given purpose, we will need to either learn to work outside of our strengths or delegate to someone who has the tool set we lack.

Reality Check - According to the © 2018 Path Elements by Laurie Beth Jones™, the tool I use in my coaching practice, recommendations for my personality type are: You can be more successful if you will Think Before Speaking, Plan More, Prepare Earlier!  Put in my place, this may not be what I want to hear but it’s what I need to hear.

Recently, in my prayer time, I heard the Lord whisper in my spirit, “Stop winging it. You are no butterfly!” Ouch! Yes, I am guilty of impromptu thinking, speaking, and writing. Research is not one of my strengths. I’m venturing out of my safe place to write my first book. Winging it just won’t do. But God… he loves me so much that He won’t High Five me when I need correction.

“For the Lord disciplines and corrects those whom He loves…” Heb 12:6 ESV
