It’s About Strategies.

Coach Me, Please | Part 4

You’ve got this! You’ve explored your Priorities, Relationships and Choices and now you are ready to move forward. Not really. What’s your plan of action? Without one, you will simply embark on a journey fueled by emotion and fall prey to aimless detours.

From Reactive to Strategic – It’s a Choice

Whether you react and take action or create a strategic plan of action you are guaranteed a result. A reaction is an emotional reflex. A strategic response is a considered action. When you react to a situation – you get what you get. When you respond to a situation with a considered eye to the future – strategically – you get what you want. It’s a choice.

Core Values Matter

They are not seasonal. They are not politically correct. They are commitments made in integrity to ourselves and to God. Challenge yourself to know what you believe. Take a moment to consider what core values matter most to you. Stated or unstated, your core values show up in your actions. What do your actions say about your values? If you could only choose one, what would that be? Some to consider (feel free to add your own):

Truth  -  Integrity  -   Honesty  -  Freedom – Trust  -  Faith  -  Justice  -  Wholeness  -  Honor  -  Self-Worth  -  Respect  -  Inner Peace  -  Love  -  Hope  -  Joy  - Relationships   Kindness  - Service  - Equality  - Humility  - Simplicity  - Excellence  - Positive Attitude  -  Charity  -  Nobility

Anticipate Challenges

The first challenge you face on your journey to change is you – your instinct to remain inside your comfort zone.

“The chief cause of failure and unhappiness is trading what you want most
for what you want right now” ― Zig Ziglar

Know that a challenge can be a new and different opportunity. Depending on your personality, you might be susceptible to distractions – bright shiny objects leading you in a different direction. Whether your challenge is internal or external you will need a decision-making strategy to address it. Consider this:

  • Time-out. Take time out to notice the challenge and/or opportunity that has surfaced.
  • Ask. How will this impact your goals? Core values?
  • Proceed. Choose your best course of action… a strategic response that continues to move you toward your future goals.

Destination – Future Reality

If you have kept up with this series of DIY posts, you’ve taken the time to identify and prioritize what matters most to you, to consider the relationships, to identify your core values and to choose your next goal. Hopefully you have also taken the time to describe your starting point – your current reality. Before you can begin to take action you need a very clear picture of your future. Take time out to describe your next goal in detail. Make it as clear and inviting as possible. Some have actually taken the time to create a vision board – a pictorial view of their next best goal. It can be a page or as big as a poster. Make it unique to you – words, pictures, and magazine clippings – whatever represents you. Include people, places, things and feelings.

Vision – your future reality – inspires you to stay faithful to your plan even when life gets challenging. Make it count!

The Coaching Process Starts Here.

With a clear vision for the future, your next step is to map it out – what are the action steps necessary to reach your goal? Fear of failure may show up as an obstacle. Remember, failure is success if you take the time to harvest the lessons learned.
