Perfectly Imperfect

Finish line in sight, we set big audacious goals. There’s clarity – we know why we want this. There’s a plan. There’s accountability. There’s action. But then… distractions. Oops, we missed a day. Disappointment shows up with very unflattering things to say.

Our choices:

  1. Continue as planned; accept that you missed a day.
  2. Start over with day one.
  3. Quit.

BIG Audacious Goal

July 1st – My BIG audacious goal: blog daily for the next 90 days. 90 days? What was I thinking? Days 1 thru 6 were a win! But yesterday – my day #7 – was incredibly busy. My calendar was booked solid but then… A neighbor wanted to stop by for a quick visit to introduce herself. New to this neighborhood, the threat of Covid-19 has kept us from meeting our neighbors. This was an answer to prayer. I love people!

With no regrets about meeting a new friend, I purposed to stay up late to get the blog done. Exhaustion showed up and sleep became a higher priority. I missed my deadline.

Perfectly Imperfect

Yes, I’ve been reminded on a number of occasions that I am perfectly imperfect. I’m not all that and a bag of chips. My goal was to develop the daily writing habit – to fan the flame of creativity. That has not changed. Lesson learned:  Write earlier in the day and allow room in your schedule for the unexpected.

When obstacles arise, you change your direction to reach your goal; you do not change your decision to get there.” – Zig Ziglar

Since perfection is not my goal, my choice is #1. I’ll keep my focus on the goal and not on the day I missed. As one of my faith heroes says, “The more you do the right thing; the easier it becomes to do the right thing.” –Joyce Meyer

What About You?

Have you enthusiastically embarked on reaching a goal and found yourself disappointed with your results? Have you given up? Perhaps in your quest to be perfect, you started over with day #1.  Whenever I’ve done that, I still have that bully speaking to me – trying to convince me that I’m still a failure.

Enough with the bullying!

Enough with the bullying!

Shut up, I say! Liar, liar pants on fire! Enough with the bullying!

Is it so bad to be perfectly imperfect? Have you learned something from the experience? Might you do better next time with some minor adjustments to your plan? What if you could reach your goal following a zig-zag pattern instead of a perfectly direct path? Are you any less successful?

Be encouraged dear friends. Let us stay focused on the goal and not the obstacles. Our purpose matters; eyes on the prize!
