Out of Order
Are you ever tempted to hang an Out of Order sign on your door?
You say to yourself, “Not for long; I just need a little extra time to catch up.”
If your world has been “Out of Order” for as long as you can remember, then you have probably lost sight of what an ordered world looks like. The just-one-more-thing syndrome has taken control of your life and you are in fact: OUT OF ORDER!
- Perhaps you’re a middle-manager. Your boss is anxious to delegate more responsibility to you and also include you in some of the strategic planning. You consider delegating more responsibility to your staff. But wait! “It is so much easier and faster to do it myself.”
- As an entrepreneur I face similar challenges. If I don’t plan ahead, I will get caught up working “in” the business vs. strategically working “on” the business.
- Perhaps your job involves meeting the needs of multiple individuals. They seem to all be important. To meet their needs you have had to farm out the work that you love. Resentful, you work extra hours believing that you can catch up – but you don’t.
All of the above… you are operating and STUCK in “REACTIVE” mode.
There was a time when being busy was a sign of a dedicated and very important employee. Not so much today! In today’s economy, we need strategic thinkers… leaders who take time out to “think outside the box”; leaders who empower their employees to do the same.
Is your world Out of Order? Check back in a few days as I share some tips on stepping out of reactive to make room for strategic.
